You might’ve seen it on the highway, in traffic, or on a Toyota truck in a parking lot: the distinctive TRD badging on the bed. It looks pretty important, but beyond that, it’s hard to know what it means. Let the Toyota experts at Waldorf Toyota break down what TRD means, what they have to offer, and more!

What does TRD stand for?

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development, a special department within the Toyota company for developing racing vehicles. However, since vehicles designed for racing share so many characteristics with off-roaders, TRD evolved over time into what it is now: a division of Toyota trucks and SUVs that are designed for tackling difficult terrain.

What do TRD Toyota Tacoma Trucks have to offer?

There are three grades of TRD capability on offer from Toyota: Sport, Off-Road, and Pro. Each grade is more off-road ready than the last, so let’s break those down.

TRD Sport

The TRD Sport package is focused mostly on appearance. It can make your Toyota Tacoma look a lot sportier without changing much as far as the performance or engineering goes. Features of the TRD Sport package include a non-functional hood scoop, fog lights, 17″ alloy wheels, TRD graphics on the exterior and interior, and a sport-tuned suspension.

TRD Off-Road

For more than just looks, the TRD Off-Road package includes a special off-road suspension system, multi-terrain select, CRAWL control, an electronically locking rear differential, and Bilstein shocks. Of course, the appearance is upgraded as well, with wide-angle fog lights, 16″ inch alloy wheels, special Off-Road graphics, and an inclinometer. Plus, with the TRD Off-Road package, your truck’s approach angle increases from 29° to 32°.

TRD Pro

For the acme of both off-roading and comfort features, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the way to go. It adds convenience and comfort features, like a power moonroof, black leather interior, Pro graphics, “Toyota” front grille, and 16″ inch black alloy wheels, to the premium off-roading features you’d expect in a beast like the TRD.

The TRD Pro package kicks performance up a notch, too, with the TRD Pro Cat-back exhaust, Fox Internal Bypass coil-over springs and rear remote reservoir shocks, a thicker front skid plate, and a suspension system with an inch of lift. The approach angle on this truck is increased even higher, to 35°, plus you’ll get premium Toyota driver safety technology like a blind spot monitor and cross-traffic alert.
